Day5 -LAST DAY of Camp

The last day of camp was really awesome and just really awesome. The first thing we did was take the rock candy out of the jars we put them in. Most of the sugar was not solid and was really sticky but the top was really solid.I poured out most of the sugar but a little was left on the string.I hope it tastes good. Then after that we poured tons of cornstarch and water in a kidde pool and stirred it with our hands untill it made oobleck a mixure we could walk on. The mixure was a solid and a liquid. It was really cool to run across and jump in.After that we were super dirty and covered in cornstarch which I really enjoyed. We didnt do much on the last day but the one thing we did was super fun.I had so much today and can't wait untill next years science camp.

Day4-Chemistry Camp

Today was filled with awesome elephant toothpaste, film canister rockets, balancing balls on ropes, magic sand, and an experiment that failed. The fist super hard thing we did was balance a ball on a rope to get it in a bucket. We did this by folding the ropes and holding it really tight that so the ball could roll on what was a "rope ramp" into a bucket. It was really difficult getting the balls into the bucket because the balls kept falling off. After that challenging activity we went inside to do an expiriment called think ink. We mixed water  and various powders and just waited for along time but it did nothing. It didn't work because it was supposed to turn black but it remained clear. Then after that disappointment we made elephant toothpaste which was awesome. To make it we combinded hydrogen peroxide with dish soap, food coloring and to make it react potassium iodide. The mixure bubbled and oozed out of the top of the beaker. It was so awesome!!!!!

Then we played with hydrophobic sand. Hydrophobic sand is sand that never gets wet.Its really cool to put in water and pour the water out and feel that it isn't wet. We played with that for a while then went on to film canister rockets. To make them we filled canisters with water and Alcester so when you put the lid on the they would explode. They went really high and to make alot more fun we glued magnets to the top and Alcester tablets to the bottom and put them onto a metal tray so that when you turned them over they all would explode. It didnt really work that well but A for effort. Cant wait untill tomorrow because it will be an awesome last day.

Day3-Chemistry Camp

Today was as awesome as yesterday filled with lots of dry ice, smoke and disgusting smells. The first thing we did was learn about acids and bases by using cabage juice which is a base.We blew carbon into the cabage juice  which turned it clear . After that we put dry ice into the cabage juice and it bubbled and turned pink. Then we made bubbles with dry ice. Also with the dry ice we created smoke ring launchers with plastic cups and dry ice by  making a hole in the top and putting dry in it to mak it prouce rings when we tapped it .Just to make it so much more awesome we used a large trash can and a bucket to make the smoke rings larger. After that we took sulphuric acid and mixed it with sugar to dehydrate it. It smelled so  bad (like burning rotten eggs) The sulfuric acid made the sugar turn into carbon and it also made it sink really bad . Then after that we made constarch monsters using vibrations with speakers. The speakers made vibrations which made the cornstarch and water mixture move up and down. I cant wait to see what tomorrow has in store.

Day One - Chemistry Camp

This week in science is not a typical school week, its chemistry camp. Chemistry camp is a high intensity summer camp devoted to crazy cool explosions, chemical reactions and more explosions. The first awesome day of camp consisted of highly difficult cup stacking, mento and soda explosions which were awesome, making bottle rockets and creating homemade rock candy which later will lead to hyperactive children. The first activity we did was to stack solo cups. You’re probably thinking easy right. NO WAY!!!!We were not allowed to touch them with our hands. All we had was a rubber band and a string for each person. We had to use team work and pick the cups up one by one which was totally super hard. Luckily Ben had done it before and told us exactly how to pick them up. Thanks Ben!!.
After that we got to watch the other teams TRY to  pick them up. After intense cup stacking we made our way outside to launch the mento soda geyser. We all pretty much know what happens when you put mentos in soda, and if you don't, just click the link below. Today in science we learned how it works. So basically in the mentos there are little craters and when put in soda( which contains carbon dioxide)the craters fill up with millions of tiny bubbles which rise to the top of the bottle creating an eruption. After we created our spectacular soda geysers we headed inside to work on our bottle rockets. This activity was easy for me because I had worked on bottle rockets for Science Olympiad. I think it was cool just doing it for fun and good practice too if I want to do it next year. I think my bottle rocket turned out ok even though I have a broken arm. T
he next activity we did was make homemade rock candy. To make this we had to a lot of sugar I mean a lot amost three cups!!!!! To dissolve all that sugar in to one cup of water we had to heat it in two minute intervals. Heating the water helped the sugar dissolve because when water is heated it allows the water molecules to be more spread out. Then just like the snowflake lab we  tied a string to a pencil and let the string sit in the mixture to let it crystallize. So far science camp has been fun and I can’t wait until tomorrow!!!
